...ah, yes!!! 1980's "The Boogey Man"
Directed by cult film maker Ulli Lommel, "BM" was an unusual, abeit refreshing change of pace, from the barrage of 'slasher' films hitting the theatres around that time. An eclectic low-budget combination of 'Friday the 13th", "Poltergeist" and "The Exorcist", "BM" has garnished a very respectable cult following, which has been refreshed lately, in light of the recent & unrelated, less-than-satisfying film from the Sam Raimi film company, "Boogeyman".
In fact, Sony Pictures cashed in slightly on the original "BM", during the release of their new one, by releasing a 'flipper' DVD, containing the original "BM", and director Lommel's third film in his "BM" series, 1994's "Return of the Boogeyman"
Lommell DID his second film in the series, 1983's "Boogeyman 2", producing nearly half of the film's running time, with flashback footage from the original; the premise of the film dealt with the survivors of the first film, being cajoled to Hollywood, where a film producer (played by Lommell, himself) wants to make a feature film, based upon the reported bloody mayhem experienced by the survivors.
Lommell reportedly has started, but not completed the fourth, fifth and sixth chapters in the "Boogey Man" series; in fact, on a special director's cut of "Boogeyman 2", the extras on the DVD include some of that footage.
...with Lommell heavily scratching that director's itch again, after several years of obscurity (with recent films like "Zombie Nation", "BTK Killer" and "Black Dahlia", and in the interest of Sam Raimi's company doing their follow-up to "Boogeyman", perhaps he will get back out there, and show them how to do "The Boogey Man" right...one can only hope!!!).
Again, although Sony Pictures DID release a DVD of the original "Boogey Man", paired with "Revenge of the Boogey Man" (and with a new, albeit generic title sequence), the best DVD rendition of the film was put out by Anchor Bay Entertainment, on yet another 'flipper' disc, with one of Lommell's other early films, 1983's "The Devonsville Terror"; I think the Anchor Bay disc is still relatively available.
...and that's it for "Boogey Man" 101!!! Any questions, class???
UPDATE (4/25/07): It appears that both the Anchor Bay Entertainment release of the original "Boogey Man", anf the flipper disc released by Sony Pictures, containing both the original "Boogey Man" and "Revenge of the Boogeyman", are still readily available (per www.Amazon.com...see 4th webpage below); the director's cut appears to be out of print...but I'm sure someone out there, perhaps Ebay, has one...
