Bret Hart had been asked to loose to Shawn at the PPV in Montreal but Bret didnt want to loose to Shawn in Canada, he said he would loose to Shamrock or even The Brawler if you can believe that but due to the bad blood with Shawn he wouldnt loose to him in Canada. He even offered to loose to HBK at the next Raw back in the states. Vince was afraid that either Bret would jump to Nitro with the belt in hand like Medusa did or that WCW would announce that they had signed the current WWF champion. So the night before Vince, HBK, Pat Patterson and Earl Hebner met in Vince's hotel room to talk about how to do it. Vince and Earl went over when to ring the bell and call Shawn the winner and Pat was showing Shawn how to defend himself if Bret smelled a rat and tried to shoot ( actually wrestle) on Shawn. At a certain point in the match Bret fed his leg to HBK to let him get the sharpshooter on, Vince screamed to ring the bell and Earl did as he was told. Shawn and Bret both stood in the ring looking stunned, Shawn was acting and tried to leave with out the belt, Vince screamed at Shawn to take the "f"ing belt and get out of the ring. Shawn leaves the ring looking pissed. Meanwhile Bret looses it and spits at Vince and starts tearing the place apart. Back stage several WWF superstars threatend to walk, Undertaker chief among them, if Vince didnt talk to Bret. Vince went to talk to Bret and Bret punched him in the eye.

It was the night Bret Hart lost the WWE title to HBK at Survivor Series in Montreal. It was Bret Harts last match in the WWE. He had a gentleman's agreement that he wouldn't lose the title to HBK due to it being in Canada, and that he would hand over the title in a farewell thing the next night on RAW.Instead Vince came down to ringside during the match and when Shawn applied the Sharp Shooter to Bret Vince yelled "RING THE DAMN BELL" so HBK won the title due to Vince screwing Bret. Later Bret went into Vince's office and knocked him out cold. HBK said he didn't know that was supposed to happen. Later it came out that HBK knew all along of what was supposed to happen. Vince stated it was for the best intrest of his business. Since Bret was going to WCW.

Points Baby!!!

bret hart was screwed out of the WWF (at the time) championship. bret was supposed to win the title that night and then the next night on monday night raw he was supposed to vacate the title and leave to go to WCW. during the end of the championship match vince comes out and calls for the bell and ends the match and makes hbk the champ. bret was pissed off and later when vince went to talk to bret, bret gave him a black eye. so that is what happened.

Well Bret Hart wanted to win the title (it was his last match) and Vince agreed he could do that. BUT somehow HBK won and Vince screwed him basically, then he spat in his face(Bret to Vince). It was very shocking, I saw it on youtube by the way.

The Montreal Screwjob refers to the real-life double-crossing of the defending WWF Champion Bret Hart by Vince McMahon, the owner of the World Wrestling Federation (now World Wrestling Entertainment) during the main event match of the professional wrestling pay-per-view event Survivor Series held on November 9, 1997 at the Molson Centre (now Bell Centre) in Montreal, Canada. A secretive change of the match's pre-determined finish (known as a "screwjob" in professional wrestling parlance) was devised by McMahon and Hart's match opponent, Shawn Michaels. The plan was executed when the match referee, Earl Hebner, under orders from McMahon, called for the bell to ring and ended the match as Michaels held Hart in the sharpshooter submission hold, even though Hart had not submitted. Michaels was declared the victor by submission and the new WWF Champion, even as Hart and the audience were outraged.

The screwjob was rooted in Hart's decision to leave the company for its chief competitor, World Championship Wrestling. Hart had offered to lose (referred to as "dropping the strap" in wrestling parlance) the WWF Championship at any event and to any wrestler save his slated opponent, Shawn Michaels, with whom he had an acrimonious relationship. Exercising "reasonable creative control" as granted in his WWF contract, Hart was particularly steadfast in his refusal to lose to Michaels in a match hosted in his home country, Canada. McMahon remained insistent that Hart lose to Michaels in Montreal, fearing that his company's business would suffer if WCW announced Hart as its latest entrant while he still held the WWF Championship. Although Hart and McMahon agreed to a compromise on the match ending that allowed Hart to retain the title, McMahon was determined to take the title off Hart without his consent.

The event's widespread impact led to its adoption in future matches and storylines of the WWF's Attitude Era and the creation of the widely popular character of the evil boss, "Mr. McMahon." Hart remained ostracized from WWF, while McMahon and Michaels continued to receive angry responses from audiences for many years. However, the relationship between Hart and McMahon healed to a great degree in recent years and culminated with Hart's induction on April 1, 2006 into the company's Hall of Fame.

This...What you don't hear is Vince ordering ref Earl Hebner, and the bell ringer to end the match...which is what happenned...but you can see Vince standing right outside the ring as the bell sounded...This was Brett's final match, and it was agreed before the match between Vince and Brett that he was to win in his final match...Vince let Shawn win, screwing Brett out of the title... the reality was that Brett was quitting WWF to go to WCW...So, Vince felt screwed too...So, ultimately they screwed each other...
