Sounds like a common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina). They don't make very good pets (mainly because they get so big and are so aquatic), but they're very interesting to learn about. (They have a lot of interesting behaviors.) Just stay out of striking range. They have a fearsome bite. It likely won't do any serious damage to you, but it will hurt like you wouldn't believe. Based on my personal experiences, I'd take a copperhead bite over a snapper bite any day.

Kinda sounds like a snapping turtle. That might not be the best pet. Definitely keep fingers away from its mouth if that's what it is. I've included a link with a picture.

Snapper- http://www.chelydra.org or http://www.austinsturtlepage.com 'World of Turtles Gallery'

Please let it go again in a timely fashion- while they make great pets for people ready for them, they take some work starting from scratch.

Sounds like a snapper to me, if it is you need to get rid of it asap. If they bite, they don't let go without cutting off their heads and prying open their mouth (happened to my brother while fishing). It's a bad idea to try to keep any turtle from the wild.
