If you leave, there is a chance they will seriously seek help. They will not seek help as long as you are around to enable.

In the case of my soon-to-be-ex, I have given him 10 years of my life and the abuse has only gotten gradually worse. I have no feelings for him anymore, just grief for the lost relationship.

You have to be strong dear, focus on yourself and don't waste your life playing a victim. Good luck to you.

The police who escorted my ex-husband to the mental institution said that only a tiny percentage of abusers ever straighten up. My ex got mental and medical help, and four years later was still doing the same crap.

I can tell you of one....my ex father in law....he raped his 7 year old daughter for years, the truth came out when she was 17. The Police were involved, he went to court, but because he had cancer he wasnt sent to prison. Yeah, he changed his ways because he was a very sick man. Ohhh, I forgot to say, he was a born again Christian, so he committed no sin in the eyes of God....so yes, this abuser straightened up, not because he found God, but the big "C" got him in the end.

Oh, I made a mistake...the daughter was 3 when he first started raping her.....he found God I think when she was 7, thats where I got a little mixed up......funny thing is though he kept on raping her even after he found God....so the Cancer was the only thing that made him straighten up.

My personal experience with my current but soon to be ex husband, is no. During the time when the abuse stopped (6 years), it only allowed his bottled anger to grow, and made the storm far worse than i could have ever imagined. Once an abuser, always an abuser; at least, in the same relationship. With someone new, it might be possible for them to change.

That would be a question for a phyci. My exhusband was put on many many different meds he was in a place several times but he never changed with me or the woman before or the woman after. But I believe no matter there problem if they truely want to change they will but if not they want because they belive due to there mental state they can get away with it.
