Salmonella is commonly carried by reptiles in the digestive tract. It is not usually a problem for the reptile unless it suffers from another condition which makes it too weak to keep the salmonella in it's gut in check.

Unclean diets have a lot to do with salmonella in reptiles, and particularly in aquatic turtles, aquarium water that is not kept clean is the biggest contributor to cross contamination by salmonella and other microorganisms.

To control salmonella and other organisms in an aquatic turtle tank: keep it clean and filtered ( use distilled or filtered water ), drain and clean the tank and decor every month or two, and as an added measure that will also help control fungi and bacteria which could make your turtle sick or cause shell disease: you can purchase antibiotic "sulfa" blocks, tetracycline tablets, or drops at Petco, etc. in the aquatics section.

For general maintenance to ease your mind, I recommend the sulfa blocks. They are commonly sold in the shape of a little stone turtle, which you place in the tank water. They are made with various sulfa based products, which were one of the first antibiotics ( or bacteriostatics ) used in the world to control bacteria.

And always wash hands and utensils after contact with the turtle.

salmonella is carried in thier digestive track the same way that we as humans carry E coli. you can't get rid of it with a drop or a pill and it doesn't harm them.
to combat this simple wash you hands before and after handling the turtle and change the water about every 1-2 weeks and have a good filter to break down chemicals in the water and you should not contract it.

Turtles do not suffer from Salmonella, they just carry it to pass on to us.

The cycle of infection is that their wastes contaminate the water, they swim in the water and get a surface infection. They then drink the water and eat food in the water and get re-infested and pass in their wastes again.

We can break the cycle with good water filtration, good hand and food sanitation, and good lighting that includes UVB rays.
