You sure ask a lot of questions - that's good. I'm not sure about answers for some of the questions, but I will chirp in on some of the others. Elemental chlorine is rarely found in nature. Elemental chlorine will form diatomic molecule (Cl2), which is a greenish colored heavy, toxic gas. The majority of chlorine atoms in the world consist of chloride ions (Cl-) in solutions. The most abundant of these occur as sodium chloride (common salt) in the oceans. There are other chloride containing salts as well - calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, etc. Chlorine is a very reactive element - that is, it exists in several oxidation states due to its ability to readily gain or lose electrons. Although chlorine is a major element found in salt, there are no adverse effects known to the body as with the sodium portion of the molecule. Again in relation to its relationship with sodium in salt, it can be considered that chlorine in the form of salt, as chloride, has been a very important part of history. It has been a major commodity and has been the instigator for wars, laws, religious beliefs and food safety thru history. Chlorine, in partnership with sodium, again, is used in the chlor-alkali industry to produce alkali metals as well as chlorine gas. Another important use for chlorine involves it's partnering with hydrogen ions to form HCl - hydrochloric acid. One common use of HCl is in swimming pool maintenance. Another form of chlorine, as hypochlorite, is used as a bleaching agent.

In nature, chlorine is found mainly as the chloride ion, a component of the salt that is deposited in the earth or dissolved in the oceans — about 1.9% of the mass of seawater is chloride ions.
