I just bought a house during the winter. No that is is warming up I am using the AC. I have noticed a strong smell of cat urine comming from the vents. this only happens when the AC is on not the heat. any Ideas as to what may be causing this and what i can do to help it. thanks.

have you changed the filter yet ? the filter will trap all dust and smells also..the intake duct before the heater ( where it pulls the air in ) may have built up dirt and dust from the previous owner try cleaning that out , also a good way to get rid of odors is to go to home depot or where ever buy 2 filters (usally super cheap) drench one down with frebreeze or any odor eater then let your ac run the air will pass threw the filter carrying the odor eater with it after a hour or 2 replace the filter with the other new one , if all else fails there are duct cleaing services GL !

If you have access to your "A" coil wash it down making sure the drain pan is draining properly. Also check the area around your return duct for odors. Like mentioned above try a fresh filter and just see if you can work the smell out of the unit.

My son-in-law had a piece of vent loose that cats got into, they took up residence there and made a mess before he got them out (wild cats) in the country.

And, how about dead mice.
