I found some datnoids at a pet shop and they were on sale so I was thinking about getting one. First of all is this even a good deal? There are 2 of them for sale. One has perfect coloration and is 2". One is 3" but it's coloration is all messed up (the stripes are faded and the body has different shades of green). they were originally $25 and are on sale for $20. Is this a good price? If it is a good deal, which of the 2 datnoids should I get? A few more things. What kind of conditions fo these fish need? Are they brackish? Hardness, ph? Ive seen people keep them with africans so I was thinking of putting them with some of mine. Its not that full. It only has 4 peacocks. One is 4", 2 are 3", and the last is 2 1/2". The ph is usually 8.1 to 7.8. The hardness is usually moderate. Its 55 gallons.

I don't know about the price, that depends on your location and what it's worth to you, but I saw one on a mail order site for $125.00. Personally I would get the one with the better coloration if I were buying one.

It's not really a good aquarium fish unless you really have lot of space to give it. It would fairly quickly outgrow your 55 and on a steady diet of african cichlids at that. Here's a couple of links for much more info about them.

and a forum about them

Hope that helps

I just got a Datnoid myself last week. Datnoid tigers come from the Island of Irian Jaya/Papua New Guinea. The island is the same land mass but spilt over the two groups. Austrailia owns the New Guinea and Indonesia owns Irian Jaya. The first answer you got was pretty right on the money. However they can tolerate brackish conditions. There is a breed from Thailand that is brackish. I am more or less of the opinon that most of the Datnoids are comming from the Irian/New Guinea islands from what I have seen.

Yes! You Can Put Them With African Cichlads. They Are Not Brackish! They prefer LIVE Food. They Are A Ambush Predators.
They Will Be Fine With Your Cichlads. They Need A Place To Hide And Ambush Their Prey From. Be Sure Your Cichlads Are The Same Size Or Slightly Larger.Yes! They Are A Great Deal! The Discoloration Could Be Their Age Or Could Be A Male. They Are Very Interesting Fish To Keep And Watch! INPORTANT! Make Sure They Have Some Place To Hide! BECAUSE They Are Solitary Fish!
