How do I ask for a continuance? Do I need to go to court and get an order to show cause?

I am asking for more spousal support because my ex has had a significant change in circumstances....would it be really stupid to represent myself? There is already an order that my lawyer did, it just needs to be modified.

Call the judges secretary and find out he/she prefers requests for continuances. If in writing, write a short letter explaining how long you need and why. send a copy to your ex's attorney.

You don't need an attorney, but you should have one, especially if your ex-spouse has one. Although documentation is a great way to start your lawyer can speak on your behalf without getting emotional, which as a parent you won't be able to do. A lawyer will be more effective in stating your case and making sure that your visitation agreement is the only issue being brought before the judge, not your emotions. And you certainly want a lawyer there if accusations against your character or other responsibilities are being flung around to make sure that the actual issue gets heard and not waylaid by dramatics. Good luck.

Ask for a continuance so you can consult with an attorney on this very important matter. As long as you have not consistently asked for a continuance in the past, the judge will likely grant one. If your ex has representation and advice, it would only be fair for you to have representation and advice as well.
