one, becuase a volcano doesn't errupt "suddenly"--before the erruption, there will be smoke coming from the top, and most likely an earth quake

two, it's not a very populated area... they had time to evacuate

There were weeks, if not months, of very elevated seismic and volcanic activity, indicating that an eruption would come soon. Most people in the area evacuated (it's a very remote area anyway).

The few people who died were scientists studying the volcano, and a few residents who refused to leave.

It erupted on a Sunday morning. Even though residents had been evacuated, there were still loggers in the surrounding forests and a few campers and hikers. The number of workers out there were few due to the time and day.

They had advance warning and were able to get away. I believe one man refused to leave saying he lived there for so long and nothing had ever happened. He was killed by the eruption.

volcanoes take a while to erupt and it gave the few people there a lot of time to evacuate.

Well it probably made tons of noise, and maybe it gave signs like.. rumbling, lava spurting out, ashes. And besides I think they weren't dumb enough to stay where they are. Or they knew it was ganna happend and they knew what to do ahead in time, thanks to scientist or something.

Who would want to live near a volcano? That is, other than the Japanese...
