It sounds as though you are referring to your diverter valve. Do you have a single handle faucet, with a spout that has a knob, that when pulled up, stops the water from flowing into the tub, and up through the shower head? If this is your faucet, then the fastest fix, would be to replace the diverter spout. Lime and calcium build up inside the spout, not allowing the diverter to completely dam off the water to the shower head. Depending on the finish of your faucet, a replacement is about $10-$50. Remove the old spout, and take it with you, to ensure that you purchase the correct style for your tub. Good luck!

Without a little more info on the particular type of shower/faucet setup you have, we'll have to assume that you're referring to turning on the shower by pulling a small knob up on the spigot. If that's the case, then the repair is to replace the spigot with a new one. The old one should turn off with either a large pair of channel lock pliers or a pipe wrench. Then you take it to a good hardware store or your local home improvement store and tell them you want another one of the same design. They should give you one that you can take home and screw back on to the pipe that protrudes from the wall. You should probably either put some pipe dope, or teflon thread on the threaded end of the pipe that sticks out, it will help seal it up so it doesn't leak back into the wall.

you say it comes from the hot side, so I'm guessing that you have different controls for hot and cold...if its coming out of just the hot faucet, then you have a bad stem valve.turn the water of going to your shower.... remove the hot knob , then the chrome stem cover, with an adjustable wrench remove the stem valve making sure all the pieces are there.look in side with a flash light to make sure nothing was left. take the old valve to the hardware store and match it up. Install in the reverse process using a little water proof valve grease
