This is major surgery. He may or may not end up with a colostomy. Ask the doctor about that.

The doctor will give your dad pain pills and he will give instructions on what sort of care he should get.

Some people sail through the surgery, others have a rough time. You and your mom need to take a minute at a time.
Be supportive and upbeat.

You personally now need to be watched for colon cancer and or benign tumors. Talk to your personal doctor about this.

expect your Dad to be there the full 10 days=a bowel operation is very hard on the body=after the operation the person doesn't feel very well and it is difficult for them to move around=they have to so their bowels will work right again it takes almost a year to get feeling like your old self again =they will be up and around by the 3rd month, but it will be slow going=it is better for them to start off with soft foods to eat as well= good luck

christine..i'm sorry to hear about your dad..and i hope he feels better soon.
how he'll heal depends upon his surgery...where the tumor is located...the size of his tumor....and what his overall health is .
all of this will determine his ability to " bounce back" after surgery.
your doctor should explain all of this to you & your mom .
take care.
