Any amount found in the street must be reported to the concerned government office under the law. However, small amounts are negligible per practice. Thus, only big amounts of money, maybe USD500, are being turned over to the government office for proper action.

How are you ever going to look for the owner unless you live in a 'two horse town'.?
Report all significant finds of lets say over $500, anything else is small enough to keep or give it to the PD.
If the amount is too small there is always the chance they will spend it on doughnuts or pizza and tell you some old lady came in and they gave it to her.
Well if you live in a complex such as apartments or condos, you may have a better chance of finding the owner if the find was within

Five dollars. Anything less the police won't bother looking for the owner. They won't bother with the $5.00 either but I would feel better having it out of my hands. Less than $5.00, I would look around for someone, probably a kid, looking for his/her money. Change I would keep & give to a bum for coffee or donate to some box that you can find taking a collection almost anywhere you look. I don't want others money. It is too hard for some to obtain.

Probably about $200+. Money isn't everything, and few Americans actually need it. I'm not rich by American standards, but I'm fine
You've gotta figure, if someone dropped more than that in cash, they were probably about to make a payment on something important, so it wouldn't feel right holding on to what someone else may have been counting on

If the money was found with identification, I would return it no matter how much it had. If it was money laying loose, around $400. Less, I would not spend it, I would give it to a local charity or church.

I would hang on to it for a little while and listen for a clue as to who, but I admit I would not call the police.
