im starting to have second thoughts about getting a hamster at the end of the summer. hamsters bite, dont live very long, and smell. a hamster is the only pet i am allowed to get so dont suggest another pet. but to people with hamsters: are they really that fun and should i get one?

i promise you hamsters are fantastic pets. Its about getting the right breed of hamster. The smaller ones are nippy, and are to fast to handle. They tend to bite. But syrian hamsters are much larger and the males, especially, are very laid back.

I have had mine a year and totally love the little guy. He never bites, loves to come out and play and responds to my voice.

Also hamsters dont smell. Owners that neglect their animals and dont clean the cage often enough causes the smell.

I promise you. Male Syrian hamsters are the way to go if you want a cute, cuddly, energetic little friend.

Hamsters are nice pets. They like you right away, and love to run around in their cute ball. They bite, but mostly it does not hurt. But they do not live long. My little guy only lived six months. We are quite sure it was because he ate the towel next to his cage (which was all chewed up), but it could have been for another reason.

yes, they are very friendly, usually they dont bite (until you have food scent on your hands..) so wash your hands before handling your hamster. They don't smell so much!!! I would tell that they don't smell at all if you clean their cage throughly.... The only disadvantage is that they live very short periods - I had 1 that lived 1 and 2 months (but she had a tumour :( and the other one live 1 year 9 months.... Good luck!!

I work at a pet store and from my own experience hamster bite pretty hard for there size, don't smell, easy to take care off but aggressive if woken up.
i would honestly consider getting a dwarf rabbit, the reason why is because they don't bite at all (they like
licking your finger if you put it close to the mouth unlike hamsters who will bite you if they dont know you), easy to take care of, and dont take up space . overall great experience with them specially if it is a young dwarf rabbit. The only con is the price: 30 to 100 dollars. its worth it guaranteed!

hamsers do bite but they are great pets:) they are prety easy to take care of and they like attention and they are fun to play with...but if anyone else lives with you dont let them pick it up without you there unless it is use to them. oh and dont mess with it for the first like week because they need time to adapt.

Yes they are very kind and if you are afraid of them biting, wear gardening gloves those are thick and teeth can not just sink through it.

you are right about what you just said about hamsters.
this is just my experience:
the hamsters i used to have, would always bite, and EVERYTIME i picked it up, it peed on me.
i don't like them. also true that they smell, alot, like when you walk in the room almost. they are also nocturnal, and to play with them, you would have to either get up at night and play with it, lol, or just wake it up, which will result in it biting you.
to me they are not fun. i prefer gerbils, which are cleaner, and friendlier no matter what others say who haven't had them.
but if thats the only pet you are allowed, then my advice is try it. hamsters are low cost and low maintenance, and only you will know if you like them. some have had good experiences, and some bad. so my suggestion is to see for yourself if you like them.
i hope i helped :)

No - forget the hamster. Changing the wood chips in the cage all the time - no, forget it. And you can't pet them if they bite.

Get a FRIEND who has a dog. That's what I did. My Mom is viciously allergic, so I couldn't get a dog. And when I pet my friend's dog my Mom stays away from me! LOL.
