That is a good question. The 1h24m is for an express train. A normal run is even more at 1h41m. Considering on the express run that they eliminate 12 out of 21 stops, you would think that more than 17 minutes could be shaven off. That's an average of about 1 1/2 minutes per stop saved. They might as well just make the stops at that rate.

By contrast, the longest run on the Union Pacific North, which is the track I use from time to time has 26 stops and takes only 1h36m. Maybe there's tighter speed restrictions due to track load and configuration on the MND line?
