Jeter is paid for more than his on-field value. He's the "face" of the Yankees, and the player with whom many fans identify. Signing him was not only a good move for winning games, but also for drawing fans.

As for his play, he might not be the god portrayed by some Yankees fans, but he's a surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer. It seems a given that he'll get 3,000 hits, and his .388 career OBP is excellent. I don't think he deserved to win Gold Gloves, but neither is he the butcher in the field that some say.

Money is relative in baseball, and paying $21m to the most popular player on the sport's most popular team doesn't seem, to me at least, that big a deal.

He is in the peak years of his contract as are various other Yankee players. Their payroll will drop considerably within the next 2 to 3 years.

Derek is one of the greatest players in baseball at the moment. It's a shame that his efforts are wasted when the pitching sucks so bad. If only he could ptich!
*I'm a Yankees fan.

Because Steinbrenner was stupid enough to offer a contract at that amount.

Wouldn't you sign it?
