The greenhouse effect. The same thing that is getting a lot of attention on earth. It's not the clouds that trap the heat, but the high concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere of venus. The clouds actually reduce the warming since they reflect energy back into space.

It is called the greenhouse effect. The atmosphere of Venus contains something in the range of forty to fifty times as much CO2 gas as the Earth's atmosphere does. Basically, this would be global warming on steroids. I do not believe there is a way that human activity could lead to a situation this severe.
