German cars are generally designed for high-speed stability on the Autobahn. Driving is taken more seriously there (they couldn't fathom why Americans complained that Porsches didn't come with cupholders), and they understand the value of a good handling car in accident avoidance and safety. American cars, with some exceptions, seem to be about creating the biggest car for the least money. In more confined Europe, size isn't the main determining factor in vehicle luxury, features and performance are.
At least, that's my opinion.

German's may have tighter machining tolerances, but the Americans are or have caught up. From my understanding, they are having problems just like anybody else. They charge more for their cars and produce less than say Ford. When you make less you have more time to spend on the assembly of the car. Not everybody can afford 80K+ for a car. Although VW is certainly cheaper than that, I assume you are talking BMW and Porsche, mainly.

Comparing a BMW to a Chevy is not a good comparison of German v. American cars in general. It's like comparing a Chevy Corvette to a Soviet Trabant.
A better comparison, I think, would be VW v. Chevy. As far as reliability goes, it depends. I used to own an '87 VW Fox, which was a POS model from VW built in Brazil. It was a very reliable car - until it started hitting years 19 and 20. Got rid of it a few months ago. It was a good car for what it was, though. My parents used to own an '86 Chevy Cavalier. That was the most reliable car my parents ever had. They were kicking themselves after they got rid of it (b/c they wanted to "upgrade"). Sometimes it's the luck of the draw.
In general, American cars have lost a reputation for quality, because producers overseas, particularly in Germany and Japan, have focused more on making cars that don't break so easily and have better fuel economy. In addition, German car makers, in particular, tend to also focus on performance as well, so their cars tend to be more fun to drive. But I would also say that cars from VW, a less expensive German auto maker, have declined in quality in recent years.
As far as Chevy goes, these cars are usually bigger, and oftentimes have plenty of horsepower (depending on the model). Reliable, though? Well, it is an American car, after all.

Anyone who owns both American & German cars (as I do) knows that there is simply no comparison whatsoever. The German engineered vehicle is tight, quiet, responsive, precise, exact. The American cars are over-powered for no apparent reason, go in a strait line pretty well, and have great stupid gadgets, like cup-holders & flat spots to adhere bumper stickers to. Want a truck to haul gravel? Buy American. Want to enjoy the sheer pleasure of driving? Buy German.

German cars aren't any better or worse than domestics. They are a product of very focused car building. Domestics are all about quarterly profits and stock price. Most European cars tend to be very high maintenance and very expensive to maintain at that. I speak from experience as I have just paid $500 for rear brakes on my Jaguar, and my old BMW always needed something and it always cost $200. The European stuff may drive better, but you pay for it at service time.

i own a repair shop and i own several other cars id just as soon drive my old Chevy truck though as any of them,i own an older model Porsche also and i still like the Chevy a lot better, some of the German made cars used to be a lot better than the ones we build, but lately their quality has dropped also, and we are catching up to them slowly but surely ,i,ll take a Chevy any day ,easier to repair and cheaper also, good luck with it hope this helps.

Technically the German cars are light years in front of American cars. This is difficult to understand when your aircraft are much in advance of theirs. You would have great difficulty in selling cars with leaf spring suspension in Europe also the power output relative to engine capacity is low.
