lets use: 3/5 of 100 = 60. if you wanted to find out 3/5 of what = 60 you would flip the 3/5 to get 5/3 and multiply by 60.
5/3 x 60= 300/3 = 100.
therefore 3/5 of_____= 40 would be 5/3 x 40 = 200/3= 66 and 2/3.
Lets check the answer; 3/5 x 66 2/3= 3/5 x 200/3 = 600/15= 40

3/5 of --- is 40
3/5=.60 when you are going from fractions to percentages it is best to change the fraction to a decimal and multiply by 100 or move the decimal point 2 places to the right. Thus .60 x 100=60% 60% of --=40
Since 60%is < 1 you can put the number 60 /100
60/100=40/x= 60x=4000=60x/60=4000/60=66.666

First of all, to know a percentage (or decimal) you need to make the fraction's denominator into 100, then the numerator is the decimal or percentage.
But for your question you want to cross multiply. So when you have 3/5 is 40/x, you do 3x=5*40, 3x=200, x=66.66.

Well, all you have to do is set it up like long division.
For your example, though, you should set it up like an equation:
(3/5)X = 40
Then, invert the fraction and multiply.
X = 40*(5/3)
X = 200/3
3 goes into 20 six times with 2 left over. Then, bring down the second zero which makes it 20 again. 3 goes into that six times with 2 left over. After that, since 3 cannot go into 2, you place your decimal point, and keep dividing as normal.

I always just divide 100 by the denominator and then multiply it by the numerator:
3/5
100/5 is 20. times 3 is sixty.
so 3/5 of a pie is actuall 60 percent

Set up a proportion:
3 x
-- * --- =
5 40
And then cross multiply 3(40), and then divide by 5. 3(40)/5=x.
