Umm... I mean like what is the definition of Giovanna. I know that it is Italian. I'm sorry, that was my fault.

Many name books and sites (esp. "baby name" ones) are VERY sloppy in their research and definitions. The suggested definition "God is gracious" is a minor example of this. (In other cases, the definitions are WAY off. And, my favorite.... two or three versions of the SAME name may appear with very different definitions!)

Giovanna is the feminine version of (Italian) Giovanni. This comes from Iohannes, the Latin form of the Greek name Ιωαννης (Ioannes), itself derived from the Hebrew name יוֹחָנָן (Yochanan) meaning "YAHWEH is gracious".

Note that it is not "God", but the 'proper name' used for Israel's God -- "Yahweh" (sometimes rendered "Jehovah"), or "Yah/Yoh" for short, as in this name. Traditionally, Jews avoided pronouncing this sacred name and substituted "Adonia" which means "Lord", when they saw it. This tradition has been picked up by other languages, including many English Bible versions, which render it as "the LORD" (using small caps).

Please note the web site I've sited. It is THE best, most responsible name site I've seen -- maybe not flawless, but careful.

Thats Italian. I know that "Giovanni" means "Joseph". So My best guess would be that "Giovanna" means "Josephina".
