In the late 60's early 70's a lot of previously unthinkable things were achieved because of the pressure of the cold war. This would be a huge pressure to know we are all going to die if we can't live some where else. Do you think we would do it then?

The key word here is colonize. A very small colony could be established but the rest of the earth's population would be toast according to the conditions outlined in your question. With a population right now at 6.5 billion, we don't have the natural resources to put together space ships for that number of people.

No. we could never do that so soon as 2024. Anyway, no comet or asteroid impact that is even remotely possible could ever make Earth less hospitable a place than Mars. All the big asteroids are in orbits that could never hit Earth. The only threat is from smaller ones, and the damage they could do, while bad, isn't bad enough to rip away 99% of the atmosphere, which is what Mars is like now, only 1% as much atmosphere as Earth. And forget Venus totally, it has 900 degree temperatures day and night.

I seriously think we would try our best to colonize. Humans have the amazing ability to adapt and create tools to adapt.

And the guy who said we don't even have the technology to land on the moon anymore is an idiot. No competent person would agree with you.

We don't even have the technology to get to the moon anymore. We'd be toast.
