This type of violence, like any other can not be completely done away with by human efforts. God and his kingdom will end all violence. We can show we want this to happen by accepting his views on the sacredness of life, and how we are to act when others are unkind to us.
Under the Mosaic Law, the killing of a burglar during the day resulted in the homeowner being found blood guilty-Exodus 22:2. Today, though, people are more interested in saving their material possessions rather than care for the life of the thief. Others feel that, if they even "feel" that their life is in danger, that justifies killing someone. The "Golden Rule" is in the Bible and we are told to not to be getting back at others who hurt us- Matthew 7:12; Proverbs 20:22; Ephesians 4:31. Today, though, people would rather get violently angry, risking their mental health, buy guns and kill innocent people, instead of following Jesus' advice to love others, look to God for justice. We should be encouraging others to live by all these and other fine principles. This won't end the violence, but some will be saved from death who otherwise would either be the victims or the killer.

The reason why gun violence succeeds in these mass slayings is that the perp goes into an environment and where there isn't a person with a gun to stop them. If the entire society was armed among the law abiding after they were trained then chances of the person getting away with killing so many would be minimal (the first crowd the VT killer encountered would have been his last).
Remember it doesn't matter if whether you believe in guns or not, but if they do the nuts. Laws don't help because the law abiding won't break the law, but the perp will violate the law anyway because it's a one way trip. If guns were banned, it only applies to those who follow the law as those break them will either buy them illegally (would bring out a new underground industry), possibly make them themselves (there are plenty of information to build from scratch), or worse start wearing a bomb (and maybe a few pipe bombs here and there to throw) like they do in Iraq since usually a spree killer is usually quite suicidal. The way America has relatively easy credit and many opportunities of renting large moving vehicles a perp might imitate Tim McVeigh with their own personal agenda of why the world deserves to suffer with them.
The only answer to prevent gun violence is to minimize it's impact, that is simply to make every able body, non-criminal adult train, qualify, conceal-carry, and deputize them. Sure you will get a few flakes squeeze thru the system but this will make it where the perp can't just casually walk over to people and blow them away while they wait a minor eternity for security, police, or swat to rescue them from their hiding spots. Personally we should all be tired of seeing people treated like sheep and seeing a remote chance a plane could fly into buildings because people aren't appropriately allowed to defend themselves. This will never stop, but it can be minimized and may even discourage many in the future because they may not get what they want, they may not even get past first level of first crowd they may try to kill.

Well, I believe in limits like, you shouldn't be able to go outand just grab a machine gun at a grocery store as easy a buying a slice of pizza. On the other hand, my favorite gun I have is a semi automatic. I dislike prohibiting guns, mostly because it would be like prohibition of alcohol. Ineffective, making criminals of otherwise law abiding citizens, crowding our jails with good people. Prohibition of alcohol made a prosperous market for organized crime. It made millionaires of street thugs. The results were in no way good and only disatrous. The prohibiton of guns would be similar. Organized crime would recognize the market and manufacture particularly dangerous guns to sell to anyone that wants them. If a criminal can get their hands on a fully automatic now, they could still get their hands on one during the prohibition of guns. However, regular citizens would be disarmed. It is like removing the daggers from their hands and replacing them with pens. The enemy remains constant, say it is a gang, armed with high powered guns. They would still have these high powered guns but up against them, you would be brandishing your pen as opposed to your dagger. Infalliably, you would be less armed, less prepared, and equaly if not more at risk. For this reason, heightened gun control is unfavorable. If guns were illegal, the status quo would not change for criminals accept they'd have deeper pockets due to profits from the market. "If guns were illegal, criminals would still have guns and those with guns would be criminals." This is to say that, yes, dangerous criminals would still have guns and law abiding citizens would not. This also is to say that anyone who did have a gun, a normally law abiding citizen, would no longer be law abiding and therefor be a criminal. It's an interesting thing to think about.

I think we should outlaw alcohol and cars. Get rid of those two and the environment would be cleaner, America would no longer but under the thumb of the Middle East, no more auto deaths, no more drunken driving and no more alcohol related diseases. After all, these two things kill a lot more than guns.
As for my gun? Try and take it from me!

Ans. this before. When I was in H.S. my friends had lots of guns, We took gun safety classes and learned to respect guns and how to handle them. Most parents try to lock their guns away, but sooner or later kids will get their hands on them. Gun safety classes should be required in all schools.
As to keeping them out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them I don't have an ans.

The rate would probably go down if EVERYONE carried one. The shooter might think twice when he's faced with the same consequences. OR, eventually they might all shoot up each other leaving the rest of us at peace.

you can't, it's going to happen, and it's a small price to pay for the right to bare arms.
