We are working on an agreement. We both realize the importance of the other in our son's life. Once we reach an agreement on what sort of joint custody arrangement we will go with and the issue of child support need, how can we get it set in stone without having to pay too much in legal fees?
Worst case scenario = hiring a mediator. Or is this the only way? How much would this one cost me?

You may be able to hire a Paralegal to oversee your agreement.Once made it will need to be notorized and still presented to a Judge for legal approval to make sure agreement is fair to both parties and covers all aspects of divorce. One tip is the Judge will make sure the childs best interest is taken care of above all the rest. Good luck

child support and custody are not synomonous. Child support is not payment for custody. Hring a mediator is a good way to go if you guys are being amicable about it. Sometimes you can avoid lawyers fees by doing so but it still has to go through the court system/court fees. How much it costs depends on where you live and all of the issues surrounding your divorce/custody/child support.

I live in the state of Michigan. All I have to do is go to the Friend of the Court, get the paper's to file. To file, is like $40. They give a court date. You go to the date, a mediator will be there, he will go by what you both agree on. If you can't agree than they go by the law. You sign the papers it is done. That's it. I have done this for visitation, child support and always only paid the filing fee of $40. I would check with friends of the court. My husband has done this with his ex-wife too.

Go to your local courthouse. mediators are available from them, for little or no cost. Also, get the paperwork from the courthouse (free) to file the necessary paperwork. Both of you will need to sign in front of a notary ($5) and file the paperwork with the courthouse for the judges review (maybe $400). That's way less than hiring an attorney.

Look into using a Paralegal (aka Legal Document Assistant). Many states allow you to use them to draw up your legal documents without the cost of an attorney. However, they cannot give legal advice. Just make sure and sign the document in front of a Notary.

Avoid mediators & lawyers if at all possible..
File your own divorce & agreed upon terms with
the court and the judge will look at it and if he thinks
it is reasonable and you both agree, he will cast it in stone.
