Because once they get in teh Senate they have a pension for life, they have expenses paid, they will have speaking jobs, they can write books and get paid for those.
And they enjoy the power.

Because being elected to certain jobs means POWER. It also means that when they leave those jobs, they will all be worth three-four times what they earned.
To those foolish enough to follow behind them that is....

Maybe to serve the public and the country that they believe in. Its called altruism.

Or maybe its the graft and residual income from special interest groups.
