Here's how you do this yourself:

1. Log on to http://www.m-w.com This is Merriam-Webster Online.

2. At the top of the page is a box that reads: "Merriam-Webster Online Search." There is a white search box that reads Enter a word or phrase... -- type your word right over their words. In this case, your word is "discount."

3. Click Search, and away you go. Here is the result for this particular search: http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary

4. Read ALL of the definitions. Read the different entries. There are word phrases that are offered to help you understand how the various meanings of the word are used.

5. Pick a definition within a part of speech for your word and find the word phrase that makes sense to you.

6. Take that word phrase and give it a subject and predicate to make it into a sentence.

Not knowing your grade level, I'll offer that the subject of a sentence is what or who the sentence is about, and the predicate is the part of the sentence that makes a statement or shows action related to the subject.

You can use this same strategy for just about any English word.

And in the future, K.M. is right! Never discount the value of doing your own homework!

(You)-understood subject
Never discount ... (discount is the action in this sentence)
the value of doing your own homework (the rest of the predicate -- answers the question, "what," as in Never discount [what?])

Because now you know how.
