Just what it says, if you give up your rights so easily, you don't deserve to have them anyway. It is essential for us to get and keep our government in check, because they are crooks. They would love nothing more than to take away all our rights.

Those who are willing to give up their liberties in the name of fear have no idea the value of the liberty they give up. People who live in this country have no idea what it is really like to live without the freedoms they enjoy; we take it all for granted. That's why some find it so easy to walk away; however, they will find out soon enough that once those liberties are gone, they won't soon be restored. Franklin was keenly aware of this having lived in the time he did. The people of that time fought the notion of a supreme ruler with limited powers to the people. Beware of anyone who threatens you by saying you will be safer if you decline the freedoms that the founding fathers fought and died for.

It means even more today than it did when Ben Franklin said it because essential liberties have been taken from us and it isn't over yet.

That every time they say it's for our best interest it's not. I was amazed how easily and willingly people caved for the patriot act. There is very little our government is doing to protect our rights or guarentee our safety and our founding fathers are rolling over in their graves right now.
