Its attributed to the simplicity of the process. Handling chromosomes under the microscope is not easy, whereas photographs can be fed on to the computer and analyzed with greater ease.

Because you can make the photographs BIG, cut them apart, sort out the chromosomes, make a karyotype, and so on.

You can't move the chromosomes around on a slide.
