The cells are the epithelial, or skin cells, more specifically, melanocytes, which contain a pigment, called melanin. Melanin helps absorb UV sunlight, which explains the evolutionary advantage of having higher concentrations of melanin in areas of the world with alot of sunlight and UV radiation. This is why in areas near the equator, which receives the highest average sunlight annually, the average skin tone of the inhabitants is much darker than in other parts of the world.
