Catalytic converters contain compounds that react with exhaust gases and remove polluting elements from them.

Many use platinum, rhodium and palladium to do this.

the newer catalysts contain small amounts of precious metals including platinum. They are mostly made up of ceramic material that is coated with these precious metals. Some scrap yards will buy them and I've seen dedicated scrap converter recyclers who will also pay for them. Not too long ago, couple of months, there was a spot on the news here in Flint, MI about people getting their converters ripped off while they were parked in a store parking lot. You would have to have a large quantity of converters to get any reasonable amount of money though

A ceramic honeycomb, usually plated with platinum.

Not sure what you mean by "who pays the most". They're all available aftermarket, and a person would be nuts to go back to the original manufacturer for one. Prices are all over the map, though, based upon the size of the catalyst and the demand for a specific model. If you're curious to see who gets socked hardest in the aftermarket, the link below will give you some ideas:

The inside of the catalytic converter is a honeycomb set of passageways or small ceramic beads coated with catalysts. A chemical reaction takes place to make the pollutants less harmful.

it is the heavy metals in the catalytic converter that people want... you can melt it at very high heats and i think some consists of platinum... which is valuable...
