Sometimes cities get rated for this question. It depends on what one is looking for. A good job base? Atlanta or Dallas. Low rents? St. Louis or Detroit. Nice weather? Honolulu or San Diego. Exciting city life? New York, San Francisco, or Los Angeles. Or Las Vegas. If you want a clean city, Salt Lake City is a good choice. Spectacular natural surroundings--Seattle or Portland. A retirement haven? Probably Little Rock would be a good choice. For me, its Honolulu all the way.

I really like living in St. Peters, MO. It's only about 20 minutes from St. Louis, so it's not right in the city, but not too country, either.

Rochester, New York Suburbs. The city itself isn't always good, but the suburbs are great. If you live in certain parts of them, you can live in a place like where you could leave your car doors unlocked and no one would steal your car. Might sound stupid, but great place to live : )
