In my biology class, we’re talking about evolution, and EVERYONE in my class believes solely in God but me. None of my friends have any thoughts about it, except to try and convert me to their religion. I feel so alone. I guess what I'm asking is, is there any one out there who DOESN'T believe everything just appeared because God made it? I, personally, think that nothing just appears on earth for no reason, and that it is ridiculous to think so. And no, I am not an atheist, and I do believe in God in some aspects. Please answer with your thoughts. Thanks.

No darling, you are not alone. You have much in common with the distinguished scientists who have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. Well over 70% of these individuals don't believe that God did anything, and the other 30%, while willing to entertain the idea that God might have done something, don't really think that God did very much.

You also have a lot in common with less erudite individuals, numerous teacher, scholars, scientists, and educators; basically anyone with enough intelligence and curiousity to learn the truth and abandon baseless superstition.

I don't know where you're from, but move away as soon as you get out of high school. It sounds like you live in a very simple-minded and intolerant community. You belong somewhere else. When you grow up, leave these people alone and let them rot in their own ignorance. You deserve a lot more, and I think you're going to be someone very special.

It takes someone very special to stand alone, against the crowd, especailly at your age. Take heart in the fact that you are in the right, and your ignorant classmates are in the wrong.

Good luck!

Actually, the answerer called "me m" has it backwards...the only people who DON'T believe in evolution are the ones who believe in the bible. And to tell you the truth, it's a very closed-minded way of looking at things. Many people (not all, but many) who believe in the bible will turn a blind eye to any scientific evidence that disputes "god's word". My a**. The bible says that God created everything in 7 days. The bible also says that the sun revolves around the earth. I'm not saying that the bible isn't really from God (I'm implying it though), but that doesn't give anyone the right to dismiss scientific findings.

Let's have a grade two lesson about words, shall we? Evolution is a "theory". Most people hear this and think it means that evolution is a "hypothesis". But that's not what it means at all. Evolution is actually a "scientific theory". The only difference between "scientific theory" and "scientific fact" is that a scientific fact can be proven with a mathematical equation. Funny, eh? People are stupid. The Electro-Magnet Theory? It's been shown time and time again through countless experiments. It's been accepted as a fact in the scientific community for MANY years. But it can't be shown with an equation. SO, it's stuck as a theory. Just like evolution! Eat that, bible boy.(s)

You are actually in the majority. More people think like you, than think like your friends. Below is a link to how many religions view evolution. Some are against it, some are neutral, but most support it. And guess what? Their beliefs did not collapse. I am a Catholic and I believe in evolution. Your classmates just need to separate the evolution of the body with development of the soul.
Evolution is the only logical reason for describing how we are related to every other living thing on Earth. It requires understanding and reasoning, and allows freedom of thought. Creationism just asks you to accept that the world is as it should be, and be content. The second link is to a website dedicated to evolution and the debate surrounding it.
I believe that you would make a good scientist. Sometimes that requires you to think differently to others.

Maybe you should study biology...

In microbiology in particular you can see evolution (or the concept of adaptation) in action. Microorganisms adapt very quickly, that is why we have antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Not everyone believes that God created everything.

I believe in God. And I think God is the force behind creation. However, I think God allowed evolution to occur. The Bible is not meant to be a history book. It is merely a guideline. Many Christians make the mistake of assuming that everything stated in the Holy Book is true. If that was the case, slavery would still be perfectly legal - so long as you treat your slaves with kindness.

Look I get sick of people who beleive in one or the other....I believe in God and I also beleive in evolution (the evidence for it swayed me)...I don;t beleive one has to be believed at the exclusion of the other.

Because at your ages, most people don't actually know what evidence is there, they chose creation and say thats it (often even if they don;t go to church or are remotely religious in any other way!!).
You can see evolution occuring on small scales today eg bacteria and antiobiotic resisitance....but all other evolution occurs so slowly to us we don't see it happening, and therefore it does not exist......however fossil evidence is kind of overwhelming....
I find the MAJOR sticking point of evolution with 99% of people anti-evolution is the human one.....but there is evidence for that too....many people don't realise how many other human like animals walked around over the last few million years! They think we went straight from monkeys to humans(which is wrong anyway....however they beleive the story)!
Do they believe dinosaurs existed? The only evidence we have are fossils.....the SAME type of evidence we have for human evolution...except human-like creatures were around more recently than dinosaurs.....

you are right to believe in evolution. This is the only theory that we actually have proof of. Many christians take the bible at face value even when logic doesnt support it. I love the fact that christians will admit that every creature on this planet has evolved in some form or fassion to fit their environment, however, us humans have not changed since we were magically created. When in doubt go with logic, it will get you alot furthur in life than magical stories.

I firmly believe in evolution. It is just the Creator's way of keeping things running.

The Bible's version of "creation" was written in way that the people of that time could understand. Our understanding of how the Creator does things has evolved considerably in the last couple of millennium.

We should look to science to see HOW the Creator does things and look to religion to understand the WHY.

You are not alone! For your friends trying to convert you, just smile and nod, let them believe as they wish. Eventually they'll stop.

I work in a research lab studying microbial evolution. We can 'see' it happening, follow changes in populations, 'see' one type become two.

Hang in there, and study! You'll be able eventually to leave your community for another one (and hopefully retain your friends while you do it) - you'll find more open minded people at University when/if you go.

Evidence for evolution = lots
Evidence for god = none.

Where would you place your bet?
