Be the kind of boss you would want to work for.

Be honest, fair, willing to listen, and to jump in when something needs to get done and there is no one else to do it!

Best of luck!

Don't ask them to do anything you would not do.
When your people whine/complain listen attentively even if you have no solution.
Be honest with your people. If your superiors are coming down on you because of something your people are doing, tell the people that.
Treat everyone with dignity and equally (no favorites).
Don't try to be your subordinates friend. Many of us have been promoted up the ranks and find ourselves being a supervisor to a friend. That usually has bad consequences when you need to discipline or terminate the friend. Besides other employees perceive favoritism.

Roll up your sleeves and work side by side, don't delegate work then walk away and forget about it. Be ready to pitch in and help out when things get to be too much or too busy that they can't keep up. Talk to them about their ideas for improvement and then if you can implement any of them make sure the person who suggested it is recognized by management for making the suggestion. (A letter from the boss, memo or something to the suggester)

Never ask them to do something you are not capable or willing to do yourself, be willing to do what it takes to get things done even if its not your job, tell people when they do a good job and reward them accordingly, teach them something they never knew before, groom them so that they can better their lot in life, truly care about them and their families.
