Because it is a better country (full stop) to live in, and it would rather spend its' money on these type of things to benefit society rather than spend taxpayers money on supporting immigrants and everything that the do-gooders want!!

It's a sign of Scotland making noises to leave Great Britain. The Scottish Parliament has made a big difference to the Scottish education system and health care. The university tuition fees were one of the first things to change when Scotland got its own parliament. Not only that, Scottish students also get a bursary to help with expenses at uni.
Do England have their own parliament just for England? If they don't they should, after all Wales, Scotland and N Ireland do.

Scotland having a seperate devolved parliament as it has at the moment. The MSP (Members of Scottish Parliament) decide how our money should be spent. Giving the elderly in our country better healthcare and free public transport are just the start of the great things we will and can do for the people of Scotland.
Scotland is not a subsidised nation, we pay fairly onto the economy and the treasury coffers. The money we get back is rightfully ours.
Also in the future we plan to scrap prescription charges and students loans, making education accessible to all.

The Barnett formula which was an attempt, unsuccessful, to have Scots stay in Scotland advantages the Scottish Office and enables it to pay Crofters through the Crofters commission to stay on the land. The old nut shell about oil, well at present we are the UK and all mineral resources are owned by the UK government, which is at present a Scottish and anti English one, the reason that England does not have a parliament is that it is not in the interests of the present government, their majority comes from Scotland and Wales, and the fact that the majority of English would vote to leave the EU tomorrow which Brussels would not like as it would lose about 89 billion per year. So the Labour party have decided to screw the English to a: keep their majority, and b: stay in the EU and keep getting the backhanders from Brussels. As things are if the status quo continues England will be removed from the map, something the Europeans have tried to do with Scottish help over the centuries, and the argument will become academic.

I was born in the south of England and educated at school there. I visited Scotland several times and worked there for a year. I've lived in NZ since 1980 and studied at uni here. In my humble opinion, Scots have a much more positive attitude to education and medicine than Poms, Kiwis or most other ethnic groups. That's why so many good doctors are Scottish.

Good on you. Perhaps England does not care for the elderly after all the majority of them went through a war, worked to make this country what it is but who cares? Not the government, obviously. As for education why should those that can't afford it have it. It's a great shame for our most intelligent young are amongst the poorer population. It is a great loss to the country. As always it boils down to money not people

there is no such thing as free care for the elderly it is actually
legalised abuse with the tax payers meeting the cost
free education yes and fee paying schools
we still take the homeless off the streets during the Edin
festival though and the Scottish parliament started falling down as soon as it was built ..they did build it next to an auld
volcano though ....a bit daft eh

Free higher education ensures that Scots are able to get degrees which then increases their chances of securing a career role in England. Elderly health care is free because so many elderly Scots live in England - see above.
In reality Scotland has what the rest of the UK should have as our UK Government has created an elitist Higher Education and Health service and the Scottish Government has shown repect to its valued citizens.

I was very surprised to find out recently that England is not legally a country. Stick with me, because this does have relevance...
England isn't legally a country because we don't have our own Parliament. The Parliament in London is the Parliament for the UK, not for us. Consequently, they're concerned with the law for the whole of the UK. The government does not have the authority or interest to change the laws in such an appropriate manner for England. Yet, they tax us to pay for these initiatives in Wales and Scotland.
I have no issue with devolution, and wholeheartedly agree that education and health care for the elderly (nursing homes etc) but the way that things are set up makes no sense and penalises the English in tax above all other countries in the UK.

Its because we have a parliament and England does not. Thing will get even better in Scotland after May 3 when we will get rid of the Labour hegemony, even though the snivelling unionist LibDems will probably be part of the coalition.

Because Scotland has its own form of Goverment now, and they can decide what they can do with their share of the money raised by the Tax Man. The same sort of thing is now happening in Wales.
What is not fare is that the Scottish (SMP) & Welsh MP's can vote & decide what can & cannot happen in England (& English Issues), while if you was an English MP, you are not allowed to vote on Scottich/Welsh issues.
