Trace the symbol on the shirt onto a piece of tracing paper. You might want to tape the shirt to a table or board or something as you do this. Transfer the stencil to a piece of thicker paper, like posterboard, cardboard will be too thick and will distort the image. Cut out the stencil, and use fabric paint (you can get it at the craft store or even WalMart) to paint the new shirt. You should also use a 100% cotton or other natural fiber shirt, that you've prewashed. Hope this helped.

How about scanning it then printing it out - then cut out the picture and use that as your stencil.
Go to a craft store and ask what type of paint you'll need to spray on your shirt.
Go to a second hand store and buy a few cheap shirts to practice on before you go out and get a good shirt.

You can buy clear stencil mylar at craft stores so that when you trace your design, you don't have to re-trace it anywhere else.

Remember, you can't re-use copywritten designs, even for personal use.
