I met L.E. Modisitt at a book signing in Sacramento,CA. The guy is a squirrel, about 4 and a half feet tall, his wife is an opera singer, but he writes interesting stuff. My personal favorite is probably David Weber, although I thoroughly enjoy Jane Lindskold's works as well as the old masters such as Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert E. Howard, H. Rider Haggard and H. Beam Piper(Little Fuzzy series is great). But I have read almost 500,000 thousand books in the last 50 odd years and it is really hard to say at this time. I also like thrillers and Matthew Reilly is my favorite author with Jack DuBrul, James Rollins and Clive Cussler on their heels.

Tolkien without a doubt, hands down best fantasy writer as well, he literally created a whole new world with languages, customs, and history. That is amazing!!!
Also Philip Pullman is quite good as well but not anywhere close to Tolkien

My favorite fantasy author would be Charles De Lint. He writes contemporary stories in an urban fantasy setting and uses a large cast of characters that appear in almost all of the books. My favorites are Jack of Kinrowan and The Ivory and the Horn

I like Anne McCaffery's Pern series best, but the Seventh Son series by Orson Scott Card is good, too.
