There is an old saying ... my enemies enemy is my friend. Ireland has been enemies of the Britain/England for centuries due to the brutal repression and oppression they have felt under the heal of the British. If Germany was also against Britain, then they could not have been half bad.

It was a statement of power and politics, warning the British that there were other bullies in the yard, that they weren't going to put up with the oppressive practices and divisive practices the British had forced on them, forever.
