Its disgraceful that people can find some sort of ´humour´in what happened.

I haven't heard any, but that is appalling. There's nothing funny about a tragedy. This is off subject...but I remember the day Anna Nicole Smith died, Fox news was making fun of it and I found that appalling. It's never funny to laugh about someone's death.

Yes yes YES. You're right. Same with Princess Di, 9/11 and 7th July.

I don't know how anyone with a conscience could laugh about something like that, it's just sick.

At least show some compassion, or just don't mention it at all, absolutely no need.

Some people just seem to find humour in anything, which is pretty sad if you ask me. I'll admit, in the past, I have laughed at the odd racist joke, but not in hateful way.

All these people saying "it's a way of coming to terms with what happened" are talking cr*p. Maybe the families and friends could, but we, as outsiders, have no right to. I do agree that black humour can help some people come to terms with trauma and disaster, just not people who say it because they do think it's funny, and make a joke out of other people's misery.

Another thing i hate is when people talk during silences, like for 9/11, D-day, 7th July etc.

A good joke is a good joke irregardless of the topic. I have heard jokes from the masscre all the way to jokes about pedophelia. I'm not much of a joke person but some give me a little giggle because of the 'concept' of what makes the joke funny, not the content. There is a difference. People who find the content funny are the ones with problems. Like a racist laughing at a joke because it is 'racist' and not because it has a funny concept. Of course you have to watch where you tell a joke like this so as not to offend others. But I am not offended.

What offends me more is a country that does nothing about it's lax gun laws and never seems to want to try something new to combat the real problem. Jokes are not the problem. Do you think those who died would be more offended at a joke or the fact they died because a KNOWN madman was able to purchase a high powered gun over the counter with very few checks?

Joanne,
Many, I'd even say most, people find that kind of humor distasteful at BEST. I suspect some people don't know how to handle their emotions or behave tactfully, so they make jokes.

It is true that some folks find humor in dark situations, usually that happen to them. But that's different.

In a Trauma Center, for example, the staff sometimes employ "Gallows humor" among themselves as a way of coping and relieving stress. That is why they have nicknames for conditions and situations that might seem harsh to outsiders.

Others joke about their dysfunctional families. Many of these folks agree that sometimes you can either laugh or cry, and they're done crying.

The difference is that the above are examples of people using humor to cope with their own life experience. "Har-dee-Har-Har"ing about someones elses tragedy is beyond tasteless.

I completley agree with you. I find it appalling when people can laugh about what happend. VT shooting was a horrible event and people should not be humored by other peoples suffering. I have not heard any one laugh about the VT shooting but on Thursday a chlorine bomb went off at my school and we had to evacuate, bomb squads, police, fire department, and paramedics showed up. We were on the field for 2 hours some of us longer, and kids were laughing about what happened. They thought it was so funny that half the school that was at lunch at the time screamed when the bomb went off. They thought it was funny that all the emergency people showed up. I did not find it funny at all. I was at lunch when it happened and it went off pretty close to me. When it went off I thought my middle school was having a school shooting. People are still making jokes about it. People that make jokes about things that happen like this need to grow up a lot. Many people were affected by the VT shooting. In some ways, I think the people that make the jokes were affected most by it but just cant let others no it.

It isn't funny at all! What would happen if someone went to one of your people's school, and killed everyone he saw, and people were so scared that they tried to jump out windows! This is and never will be a funny situation, and if you think that making jokes about it is funny, then you are messed up. and you are even more deranged to think that those jokes are even the slightest bit funny! many people were affected by the killing that took place there, and they have to live without there son(s)/ daughter(s), or someone related to them, in Connecticut, some schools are making an adjustment to avoid this situation from re-accruing. It was a true disaster, not as big as the hurricane, but it's terrible to make jokes when people have DIED because of what happened.....

I will tell you that a good many jokes made in connection with this event may be inappropriate sounding at best, downright sickening at worst. However, society does, as a rule, attempt to cope with numerous horrific events through humor and even the blackest most morbid humor may serve a therapudic perpose to those suffering.

It's black humour and helps people come to terms with what happened. There were some good ones when Diana died. Obviously those nearest and dearest to those killed would not find them very amusing, but I'm afraid I do - so thumb me down.
PS I haven't heard any yet, can you post one?! (that's just never gonna happen is it ah well . . .)

Sometimes people use humour as a way of dealing with something too painful to think about in any other way.

no. you are not alone on this one. i love a good joke but when its to do with any tragedy, death or disaster it sickens me. i remember only too well the sick jokes that went around after the death of princess Diana, haven't the people close to whatever tragedy been upset enough without these sick jokes going around. sorry if you think I'm ranting , but this really gets my back up.
