My 5-week old son takes approximately 4 oz of formula every 3 hours. Sometimes it's a bit less, and sometimes he still acts like he's hungry after he takes the 4 oz. If we give him any more than 4 oz when he continues to cry and root like he's still hungry, he continues to eat but then usually ends up throwing that last ounce or so back up within 15 minutes after we've finished feeding and burping him. It seems like sometimes the formula isn't sustaining him.

Will he ever take more than 4 oz of formula at a feeding, or should I be giving him something like baby cereal in addition to his formula, or mixed in with it? According to the doctor's office his weight is right on target, so it's not like he's starving. And I'd hate to give him something that will upset a sensitive baby stomach.

What do you think? Is he too young for a little cereal, or should we continue to give him more formula?

As he gets bigger he will start to eat more than 4 ozs (his little tummy will be able to hold more) Most people will say that he is too young for cereal but I gave my son cereal in a night time bottle when he was about this age. (And yes his dr knew that I did and he had no objections) If you do start giving him cereal make it only like a teaspoon in his bedtime bottle and make sure to keep an eye on his bowel movements (rice cereal can be binding)

My son did the same spitting up thing too. He just had to have that last little bit but it always ended coming back up. For him it was just a phase, and he got over it. It may not be so much that he is still wanting to nurse more that the suckling motion is very soothing to the little ones. You might try a pacifier after his feeding that my stop the rooting around.

He is too young for cereals. Maybe your baby has acid reflux or something. Have you talked to the doctor? 4oz is a good sized feeding for a baby. Your baby could be going though a growth spurt or something also. Also, if they have a tummy ache they will do all the same things that they do when then they are hungry. Maybe the baby has gas, have you tried the gas drops?
I would say discuss your concerns with the babies doctors. There could be lots of things. Maybe you need a different formula. Maybe its gas, maybe you are overfeeding the baby. Just talk to the doctor.

There is a formula called Enfamil AR ( Added Rice) it is supposed to stay in the baby's tummy longer if they keep throwing it back up. It is worth talking to ur pediatrician about if ur worried. Also u might try maybe switching from Powder to either concentrate or Ready to Feed formula with the Brand ur using now.

No cereal! What I always did, was fill up a 8 oz bottle and let my daughter drink until she was done. Also a pacifier is a must!

He is too young for cereal. My doctor always yelled at me and told me my daughter eats too much. (she ate 3 ounces every 3 hours) BUT she is not overweight (50th percentile) and she is healthy. If your son truly is hungry, try to feed him more. He might just want something to suck on though. You can give him a pacifier or lut him suck on his hand, your clean finger. Babies love to suck. Also check his diapers. Are they consistently wet/dirty? If they are he is getting enough to eat. If not he may need more.

No dont give cereal yet hes much too young but what about changing his milk to the hungrier baby milk, if you ask your doctor they may be able to recommend the next one for you, in the uk I'm assuming you are in the US we have stage one like sma gold and then the next step for the baby would be sma white not sure what your milks are there but maybe he needs the next stage for the hungrier baby. Congratulations on your baby :)
