These days you can be both at once!! If you like to play around with your camcorder, make short, low-budge films in your spare time, but I would pursue the pilot thing for an actual career, because that is something youactually need school and a license for, whereas you can be a successful director with little or no formal training. For instance, Quentin Tarantino was just working at a video store when he was writing Reservoir Dogs, which was his major breakout directorial debut. I don't believe he went to college for film.

I say play with your camcorder and see what you come up with. Enter your project(s) in some local film festivals and see what comes of it. If you're 18, what about film school? That can help you figure things out. As for being a pilot, I don't see why that's impossible if you already have your license. It sounds like you're on your way and you may be able to take your pick or have both!

Writing your ideas down as screen plays and having workshops with your local theatre group is a good way to see if your ideas tranfer smoothly when being read aloud. Sometimes I write a play that I really enjoy, but once I start workshopping it, I realize that it doesn't sound nearly as good when being read. Workshopping is a very helpful tool in script writing.
