I can't speak for all areas, but two installed near me have prevented overtaking at fairly dangerous points on the road.

If they are a hidden tax, they are at least one tax we can choose not to pay. Just stick to speed limits.

They may discourage speeding, which is NOT a bad thing.

Red light cameras are by far more helpful. I work in a profession where I see the end-result of much red-light running & can tell you, those are among the most lethal types of collisions...... so if a few cameras annoy a few people, but stop some collisions, I'm all for it.

I think in South Wales they do not save live`s because in a lot of places where there are fixed camera`s you often see flowers where people have died just before the camera`s or just after
This happens a lot so they obviously didn't save lives
I think its because when people see the camera they slam the brakes on and lose control of the car

I'm all for speed cameras in built up areas where excessive speed would cause accidents. I do not believe in putting them on motorways or fast A roads where there are very few hazzards. I think the cameras sited on motorways and "safe" A roads are just revenue earning devices.

OPINION: They do not help, they will reduce speed close to before it and going though it them people just speed up afterwards. Speed camera's are not a replacement for traffic officer's but the government do not agree and are reducing there numbers in favour of the highways agency - bad move. Traffic officers do a good job at stopping traffic offence's but uncover other criminal activity at the same time.

In the UK speed cameras are mainly revenue collectors, saving lives is an excuse because governments over the years have seen lives being lost to wars, smoking related diseases, alcohol related diseases, industrial diseases and haven't done a damn thing about it.
Who are they kidding!

Can tell you this............a few blocks from my house they installed red light cams. Anybody caught in the intersection when their light is red gets a photo-ticket mailed to them for $120! Ironically, rear ending accidents have gone up 300% in that intersection since the red light cam was implemented from all the people slamming on their breaks at the last second to avoid a ticket! But hey, at least the city is making more money. Right???

They do save lives, but I'd still rather be nicked by a good, old-fashined and slightly condescending copper! I find sticking to the speed limit a good idea.
