Think about it. There much be one event that is the defining moment for the past and the present. The creation of the world, in whatever way you believe it to have happened, is the obvious answer. But there is sure to be another moment we can look at and say, "This is why we are what we are!" What do you think is the answer?

I don't think that it can be narrowed down to just one event. There are too many wonderful things that have happened.

How do we answer that question. The greatest event may have happened before there was life on earth. Perhaps with the creation of the moon, when a Mars size sphere hit the earth and split off the moon.

People will say it was some event in our history, like the birth of Buddha or Jesus or some other myth, but those events happened in the mind of man and not on the earth, so they should not be listed. Also most of those events are open to debate, to say the least.

Finally, your question does not have enough qualifiers for us to decide how to answer it. But my vote would be the creation of the moon from the earth. Quite a cosmic blow.

Jewish philosophy says that each person is an individual universe. I would then say that the conception (sperm meets egg) of a person is that person's defining moment.

From another standpoint, it's defining as well because the DNA of a person is then defined, and the DNA is a person's basic "blueprint."

At least in the modern world, the printing press. It led to a much better dissemination of information, which led to Martin Luther, better science, the Enlightenment and Renaissance, and helped start us on the long path out of religion and superstition to a more enlightened society.
