How does having herpes affect delivery. Would like to know how this affects giving birth and would like to hear from anyone who has experienced this or knows anyone that has.

Genital HSV can cause potentially fatal infections in babies. It is important that women avoid contracting herpes during pregnancy because a first episode during pregnancy causes a greater risk of transmission to the baby. If a woman has active genital herpes at delivery, a cesarean delivery is usually performed. Fortunately, infection of a baby from a woman with herpes infection is rare.

If you have an outbreak they will take the baby via c-section because it is possible to spread the infection to baby-especially in the eyes. If you don't have an out break, you can have a normal vaginal delivery. Ask your practitioner what their procedures are. Some doctors may give you medications to help prevent an outbreak before delivery. Good luck!

Its only an issue if you are having an outbreak at the time of delivery. MAke sure that your Dr delivering your baby is aware.
