I just tried this on my Logitech wireless combo keyboard and it doesn't do it. I can only think of two possibilities:

1. Always when there is a question with a battery powered device, install new batteries - this often corrects the issue. Battery power isn't a "yes" or "no" - there are many levels of charge where a device may respond differently when the batteries get a little weaker.

2. If the batteries are new, this may be (as you suggest) a power saving "feature" that is not in all brands of wireless keyboard - you could try another brand if you really want wireless.
