John and Washington Roebling. John (the father) developed a method of creating wire cables and perfected it in Europe. These cables could be used to create spanned bridges.

Roebling won the contract to build the B.Bridge and began the work. The senior Roebling died on the jobsite in 1869 (tetnus) and the son continued the work. During the construction he became seriously ill with what was then called Cassion' Disease.. (today we call it the bends.. a problem created by breathing air under pressure and then returning to atmospheric pressure too fast). He was bed ridden for the second half of the construction and 'officially' overview of the project was done from his hotel room by telescope. His wife, Emily, would then bring 'messages' to the crews from him.

In reality, his wife is unofficially credited with the second half of the construction since Roebling was essentially a veggie by then. However women had few rights at this time and could not be permitted to lead such jobs, as such Washington is credited with the rest of the work after the fathers death.
