Basically, it's made of DNA, deoxyribonucleic acid.
A gene is a "discrete unit of hereditary information consisting of a specific nucleotide sequence in DNA (or RNA, in some viruses".

A gene is a sequence of DNA that codes for a particular protein that later on causes expression of a phenotype. A gene may contain some non coding region which will be taken out in process of making mature mRNA. Be aware that DNA has many many sequences that don't code for any particular product; these sequences are not called Gene!

Nucleic acids, which basically are the letters of the genetic code. Your genes are like words composed of different nucleic acid sequences.
