World War I, also known as WWI, the First World War, the Great War, and "The War to End All Wars," was a global military conflict which took place primarily in Europe between 1914 and 1918. More than nine million soldiers died and millions of civilians perished. The conflict had a decisive impact on the history of the 20th century.
The Allied Powers, led by France, Russia, the United Kingdom, Italy, and the United States, defeated the Central Powers, led by Austria-Hungary, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire.
Fighting took place along the Western Front, within a system of trenches and fortifications separated by an area known as no man's land. These fortifications ran from the North Sea to Switzerland. On the Eastern Front, the vast eastern plains and limited rail network, prevented a trench warfare stalemate. But the scale of the conflict was just as large. The Middle East and the Italian Front saw heavy fighting as well. Hostilities also occurred at sea and, for the first time, in the air.
The war caused the disintegration of four empires: the Austro-Hungarian, German, Ottoman and Russian. Germany lost its overseas empire and states such as Czechoslovakia, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Yugoslavia gained independence.
World War I marked the end of the old world order, which had emerged after the Napoleonic Wars. The result of the conflict was an important factor in the outbreak of World War II.

For US troops, the men (the only women were nurses, I think) trained in bases in the US. I think boot camp or basic training was similar to today, but of course with some different weapons. I don't know any details, but most of the men were in trenches. Some would have been behind the lines, too. And some trained as pilots in the primitive planes they had then. But trench warfare was the most common type of warfare. They were dug in for weeks or even months at a time, with the enemy a few hundred yards away at the most. There would sometimes be a lot of shooting, sometimes very little. ANd there was the danger of Mustard Gas attacks as well as artillery shells and bullets, etc. There was also disease, it varied from place to place in different parts of the war. Because of no sanitation, there were places where diseases like typhus, spread by lice; thypoid and cholera, spread by contaminated water, even smallpox in some areas (not usually among Americans, who had been vaccinated). But the worst disease was the 1918 INfluenza epidemic that killed millions world wide, not only in the war torn areas. Soldiers were dropping dead in the trenches from the flu, as many if not more than from wounds. Because of the close contact of men in the trenches, if one caught it somewhere, soon they all might get it. I don't know how many men were in a trench, but it may have been a dozen or more.
