Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, bordering Michigan City on the east and Gary on the west. This beach was awarded the best beach of 2004 in USA.

There are a lot of beaches near Michigan, but the best one that comes to my mind is the one mentioned above. This would be the nearest good beach Ohio.

If you are ready to travel Copus Christi beaches in TX (South Padre Island) would be an ideal choice.

If you don't mind getting on a plane, fly to Nantucket Island off the coast of Massachusetts. The island has the most beautiful and unspoiled beaches on the entire east coast. It also has tons of history as it was the whaling capital of the world in the early 1800's and has more historic homes per square mile than any place in the US. It's 30 miles out to sea but worth every minute of travel to get there.

Technically, it's not that close to Ohio, (except by plane) but if you want real beaches with tons of history (and great restaurants), you've got to go to Nantucket. The best beaches there are on the South Shore which has Atlantic surf (Cisco, Miacomet, Madaket and Nobadeer)

The closest beach to Ohio is probably along Lake Erie. The Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources web site can tell you all about the State Parks along Lake Erie.
