B cells and T cells are lymphocytes that work in the immune system, and circulate in the blood. Like all blood cells, lymphocytes originate from pluripotent stem cells in the bone marrow. Some remain in the bone marrow (B cells) or migrate to either the thymus (T cells), where they mature.

T cells :

- T lymphocytes are thymus-derived lymphocytes ;
- play a central role in the generation and regulation of the immune response to protein antigens;
- T cells originate from bone marrow stem cells that develop into T precursor cells that migrate to the thymus where they multiply and differentiate

B cells :
- cells are primarily involved in antibody production and antigen presentation to T cells
- B cells originate from lymphoid stem cells in the fetal liver and the bone marrow
- B lymphocytes are thymus-independent cells that express intrinsically produced immunoglobulins on their external membranes and upon stimulation by antigen differentiate into plasma cells that produce and secrete large numbers of antibody molecules
