Yes, as there are no powers of x or y other than 1.

y = 3x - 10 ==> Yes, this is a linear equation. If the 'x' term does not have an exponent written (such as x^2, x^(1/2), x^3, etc.), it is always a linear equation. In this case, the reason the exponent is not written, is because it is implied that it is x^1. The reason we don't write: y = 3*x^1 - 10, is because x^1 = x, so it's redundant. Basically, anytime you have 'x' by itself, with no written exponent (i.e. implied exponenet = 1), you have a linear equation. For your second question, is y = 3x2 - 10 linear, I assume you mean: Is y = 3x^2-10. You have to be careful with how you write the equation, because the way you have it written reads: y = 3*x*2 - 10 y = 6x - 10 (this IS linear) However, it's written as: y = 3*x^2 - 10 then NO, it's NOT linear, because here there is a written exponent next to the x, it is x squared. Whenever you have an x^2 in the function, it is definitely not a linear function. Because x^2 is the highest exponent, this is what is known as a quadratic function. Basically, you look at the equation, and find the value of the highest exponent of x in the equation: If the highest value of the exponent = 1 ==> Linear equation If the highest value of the exponent = 2 ==> Quadratic equation If the highest value of the exponent = 3 ==> Cubic equation Not sure what it's called after that. Hope this helps.

Yes it is. If you have trouble with those kinds of problems I suggest you buy a TI-83 Plus calculator. There is a feature on it that lets you enter an equation and see it graphed.

Yes it is because x is raised only to the first power.

If x were squared, it would be quadratic equation

If x were cubed, it would be a cubic equation.
