Its not a large cut, only about an inch long, and its not too deep, but it took the skin off. She doesnt seem to be in any pain, but how do I treat it? Should I bandage it or leave it open? It has stopped bleeding, but I do not want to risk infection. Normally Id call the vet, but he lives awfully far. Any suggestions?

Just make sure that you get it clean and then apply an ointment to it I would recommend Corona. It will help keep it soft and repel flies. Just keep and eye on and clean it off, biggest thing is to keep is soft and supple so it can heal and wont scar. Leave it open and DON"T apply anything that has alcohol in it, that is very drying and wont be good for the healing of the cut.

I would call the vet, and ask him over the phone!!!! He doesn't need to come out, but I'm sure he can recommend a product to help speed along healing!

If momma will let you, I'd lightly wash the wound with some soap, and then put on some ointment made for preventing infection. There are many ointments on the market to treat small cuts and abrasions, I know I always used to use this stuff that looks like lemon pudding! I believe it's called Fura-Zone by Neogen and it works fantastic. You don't need to cover the wound or anything when you use this stuff (you can cover with a bandage is need be). Farnam's Wound-Kote also works great, but the aerosol might scare the crap out of baby.

Most tack shops or livestock shops (like Fleet Farm) will carry wound care products. But I's just call the vet to consult!

just clean it out with batadine or iodine or water and hose his leg off with cold every day. then when your done dab it dry and apply an ointment that repels flys and infection. there is one and i cant think of it but you can use neosporin too. do not bandage it, it will keep it moist not good.
Good luck and it should work out fine

clean it well with betadine or iodine then i would use farnam wonder dust. it helps prevent proud flesh, repels flies and seals the wound. ointments can just gather filth on the wound site. alternatly you could use blue-kote or fura zone spray instead of the wonder dust. i reserve ointments for areas that must be kept moist or can be bandaged.

i would leave it open cuz if you put a bandage on it itll cause it stress and try to take it off. but i would put some atibacterial ointment on it though. make sure that no mud or stuff gets into it. goodluck!

this is a actual shame that somebody could purchase the mare understanding it has a newborn by making use of this is area with plans of dumping the toddler. the advice your sister gave you a million/2 extraordinary. you mustn't ought to place a rope on him and choke him down as small as he's. because of the fact the toddler strikes to get faraway from you, have you ever husband "clothesline" (for loss of a extra appropriate description) the toddler around the chest to sluggish him down and than positioned the different arm around the rear end. He could have the potential to get the toddler stopped and no longer able to bolt. the toddler remains sufficiently small at this age that he can cradle it in his palms and supply you time to place a halter on the toddler. when you get the halter on, get a lead line that has been shortened to approx. 18" and bypass away it on. this could make it easier to get your palms on the toddler till it gets used to you devoid of hurting him. After that, get waiting to spend lots of time with him because of the fact he will must be fed each couple of hours. good success to you!!

Call the vet on the phone and ask his advise.

DON'T use iodene!!! It is likely to cause scarring. I wouldn't advise bandaging either.
